The European Court of Human Rights has started approving North Cyprus Immovable Property Commission’s decisions. The Commission was established under Law No: 67/2005 in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The law was passed in line with the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Xenides-Arestis vs. Turkey (7 December 2006).
This law gives the Greek land owners with pre 1974 titles the right to apply to this Commission. According to the decision of the Commission the applicants will be compensated by the TRNC Government. Once they are compensated they will not be able to claim anything further regarding their properties in the North. Thus expatriates owning pre 1974 Greek properties will be protected.
So far, approximately 300 applications have been concluded.
